Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make the student acquainted with the basic notions in the field of general linguistics. English language study and history of English studies in the Czech lands. At the same time, it is crucial to discuss 20th century linguistic schools and theories and their applicability in present-day language research.
Syllabus
  • Language as a System of Signs. Form and Meaning in Language. Encoding and Decoding. Language Functions
  • Pronounciation and Spelling. Sounds and Phonemens. Segments and Suprasegments.
  • Grammar in Spoken and Written Language. Grammatical Acceptability.
  • Vocabulary, its Structure and Development. Basic Vordstock, Vocabulary Stratificaion.
  • Discourse Analysis. Text and Context.
  • Structuralism. Ferdinand de Saussure and the Geneva School.
  • Prague School of Linguistics:Mathesius, Trnka, Vachek, Jakobson, Trubetzkoy. Functionalism in the Prague School.
  • American Descriptivism: Bloomfield. Anthropological Linguistics:Sapir, Whorf.
  • Transformational Grammar:Chomsky. Surface Structure and Deep Structure.
