Cíle předmětu
The course will focus on aspects of the work of writers such as Graham Green, George Orwell, Anthony Powell, J.R.R. Tolkien and Evelyn Waugh, most of whose best work was produced between 1930 and 1960 and who began to produce more accessible and populist forms of fiction than the more arcane and experimental works of their twentieth century predecessors. We will consider both the issues which preoccupy them in their fiction and the way in which they have influenced subsequent writers. The course will also include a section on travel writing, which formed a significant part of the work of writers in this period.

Assessment by class contribution (20%), two seminar papers (40%) and essay (40%)
