- Course objectives
- This course offers an introduction to the formal study of games, especially videogames. Game, as we understand it, forms an interactive system in which rules define an artificial conflict with a quantifiable outcome. The game could be described from 3 perspectives, focusing, respectively, on its rules, play and culture. We pay attention to several manifestations of interactivity in the cultural history from social and sport games to experimental literary and film works. Our main focus will be the videogames, their formal aspects and genres. The objective of this course is to see game as the basic element of all human cultural activities. This course follows the approach delienated by the the book Rules of Play by Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman (Massachusetts 2004).
