- Course objectives
- The period covered by this course coincides with the rise and development of British Cultural Studies as a new field of study. We will try to map out the cultural scene in Britain from World War II to the present day, highlighting the new ideas and various trends in literature, drama and film as well as the lifestyles and concerns of mainstream and minority cultures as they emerged decade by decade. At the same time we will trace the development of some of the theories and approaches in British Cultural Studies. The materials used will include Arthur Marwick's British Society Since 1945, essays by T.S. Eliot, Richard Hoggart, Dick Hebdige, Germain Greer, Stuart Hall, Brian Appleyard and others, as well as extracts from films.
