Course objectives
The course will familiarize students with Jan Mukařovskýs esthetics and criticism as they developed througout his career from the early psychologism, through the formalist and structuralist stages, to the marxist-leninist finale.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to understand basic notions of Czech strukturalism;
to learn the history of Mukařovský's work;
to interpret his work independently.

  • 1. Survey of Jan Mukařovskýs life and oeuvre.
  • 2. Psychological beginnings (Otakar Zich).
  • 3. The Russian formalist inspiration.
  • 4. Linguistic sources (Saussure, Bűhler).
  • 5. Linguistic structuralism.
  • 6. Sociological sources (Durkheim, Vološinov).
  • 7. Sociological structuralism.
  • 8. Phenomenological sources (Husserl, Špet, Ingarden).
  • 9. Phenomenological structuralism.
  • 10. From structuralism to marxism?
  • 11. Mukařovskýs institutional agenda in the 1950s and 1960s.
  • 12. Mukařovský today.
