Course objectives
The subject will focus on the history of the Nazi secret police headquarters - the Gestapo in Brno (Geheime Staatspolizeileitstelle Brunn) in 1939-1945. The course will deal both with the structure of the Nazi security administration in the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, its division and personal constitution of the most important posts, the function of the headquarters and the activities of its departments with regard to the oppression of the local resistance movement in Moravia during the World War II, i.e. especially the operations against resistance groups, the activities of informers, arresting people, questioning and the imprisonment of the arrested members of the resistance movement. The students will get a detailed review of the Gestapo operations in Brno during the WW II and they will work with archive sources written partly in Czech and partly in German.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory lesson, review of the subject, the constitution of the security administration in Nazi Germany in 1933-1938.
  • 2. The occupation of Brno on 15 March 1939.
  • 3. The Gestapo headquarters in Brno, its structure and personal division.
  • 4. The Nazi security institutions in Brno and the first wave of arrests (operations Gitter and Albrecht I.).
  • 5. Closing of the Czech universities and the occupation of Kaunitz and Sušil Students' Halls on 17 November 1939.
  • 6. The breakup of the movement organization Obrana národa (The Nation Defense) and other resistance groups in Brno district in 1939-1940.
  • 7. The establishment of the informer net of the so-called "shills" and the activities of the Erlan agency.
  • 8. The terror under the first and second martial law.
  • 9. The Nazi persecution of churches in Brno district.
  • 10. The operations of the Brno Gestapo against the airborne groups from the UK and the Soviet Union.
  • 11. The methods and the course of fight against guerilla groups in Moravia in 1944-1945.
  • 12. The end of the headquarters in Brno in April 1945 and the postwar trials with the Gestapo members.

Assessment methods
The classification will evaluate attendance which will be proved by signatures on the attendance lists. The students will also have to write an essay based on materials from the Moravian Municipal Archives (Moravský zemský archiv) in Brno. These include the materials from the postwar investigations and trials with the members of the Brno Gestapo in front of the so-called Special People's Juries (Mimořádné lidové soudy).
