Course objectives
The main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
gaining the basic knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology and its influence on the modern visual arts and literature. The standard course is supported by an e-course http://www.phil.muni.cz/elf/course/enrol.php?id=521. At the end of this course, students are well informed about the system of classical mythology and relevant secondary literature so that they can find basic information about any ancient mythological character. They are also able to interpret the characters of the modern visual art inspired by antiquity.

  • 1. Greek cosmogony.
  • 2. -3. Olympian gods.
  • 4. The gods of the sea.
  • 5. The earthly deities.
  • 6. -7. The Underworld.
  • 8.-9. The lesser gods and heroes.
  • 10.-11. Mythological epic cycles. Corinthian cycle, Argivian cycle, Heraclean cycle.
  • 12.-13. Roman mythology and religion.
