Course objectives
The lecture and seminar focus on detailed study of the history of philosophical views on history and society in the period from Antiquity till Classic German philosophy. Students will also get acquainted with basic primary literature and basic notions such as "state", "society", "nation", "ideology" etc. Main objective of the course is to know thoroughly the philosophy of history and society in the selected period and to learn how to connect the emergence of these perspectives with the historical and social situation of the period.
Syllabus
  • 1. The ancient social philosophy: the Sophists, Plato, Aristotle
  • 2. Hellenism: Polybius, Epicureanism, Stoicism, the beginnings of the Christianity - Aurelius Augustinus
  • 3. The Middle Ages conception of the society. The relation of the profane and sacral powers. St Thomas Aquinas
  • 4. Renaissance and the Reformation. Utopia, Machiavelli, Grotius, Bodin, Luther, Calvinus
  • 5. The social contract in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century
  • 6. Enlightenment and its concept of history and society
  • 7. The history and society in Classic German philosophy
  • 8. The main notions of social philosophy: state, ideology, democracy, liberalism

Assessment methods
Lectures completed by students presentations based mostly on primary literature. Before passing the oral exam, it is necessary to prepare a presentation assigned at the beginning of the course.
