Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to provide detailed information on mutual relations between the rise of British Oriental studies in Calcutta and modern Hindu reformism. The basic assumption on which the course is founded is that the modern Hindu reformism in the form into which it developed during the 19th and 20th centries was highly indebted to so called oriental renaissance carried on by British administration (and institutions of Oriental studies and training) and subsequently further developed by the new Indian intelligentsia.
At the end of this course, students should be able to understand to explain relations between colonial administration, colonial knowledge, traditional sets of knowledge and the transformation of traditions due to their encounter.

Requirements for colloquium / prerequisite for the oral exam:
There is a compulsory reading for each seminar and the active participation in discussion is expected. These discussions form the core of the seminars. If a student haven't aparently read the appropriate text or was absent during the seminar, he ought to prepare a synopsis on the reading. Maximum three absences in the seminar or in the discussion are allowed (in which case the synopsis is not demanded).
The time schedule and the link to appropriate literature to each of the seminars is accessible through the Interactive schedule ("Interaktivní osnova") in the IS.
It is expected that student submits an assay (4-7 pages) on whatever related topic. The list of topics with appropriate bibliography, which student can consult in the case they do not have an idea what to work on, is provided in Study materials in IS.
Colloquium:
The colloqium on this essay will be held as well. The colloquium has a form of conference where each student has a short (5 min) presentation of his topic and afterwards defends his views against the criticism of his colleagues. Student ought to demonstrate that he is able to make a concise presentation of his topic and results, that he is able to defend it against criticism, and that he is able to provide a criticise of relevant point in the works of others.

The course is provided in English medium so that it can be attended by foreign students of Masaryk University. In case there are no foreign students attending the cours, the medium of instruction could be possibly changed into Czech.
Essay 4-7 pages – condensed analyses ("condensed" means that the essay should be short ans not much descriptive. It should express clear idea. Broader insight into the issue should be shown in it, and some theoretical dimension in it is welcome.)
Topics of essays: per your choice (consultation recommended) - if you are not shure about the topic, choose from the list provided in the Study materials. Lectures will be concerned mainly with the initial moment of British-Indian encounter and should focus on deep cultural transformations it produced. It is the ground on which it is more easy to understand various aspects of modern hinduism, hindu nationalism, modern and contemporary Indian politics, social and religious reform etc. But it provides insight into purely theoretical problems with conceptualizing religion in general and hinduism in particular as well. I would like you to have solid grounds and be able to develop your own interrests in similar related topics. Hence the topic is per your choice and it is expected that a students picks a topic from whatever above mentioned area.
Alternative choice: book review - if you do not feel comfortable with writing an essay, good review (it means publishable review - mey be in Sacra) of some good secondary book is another possibility.
Deadline for the submission of an essay: 72 hrs before colloquium (date of colloquium will be announced; first possibility will be during the last week of lecture term).
Submission: To a Submision folder in the IS.
Active participation: means discussion (on literature) during the seminars or if you are not able to be present at the seminar, you should submit synopsis (1 page; apart from three cases of allowed absence). Synopsis should be short and clear - if it is made of three sentences - first clearly expressing the author's notion, second your criticism and the third how you would do it different way, than I am fully satsfied. If for the same you need three paragraphs, I am satisfied as well.
Synopsis and essay can be submitted in Czech as well as in English - per your personal choise. But the colloqium will take place in the language intelligible to foreign students - i.e. in English. So your presentation for the colloquium must be prepared in English. Another thing is that if you do everything in English, you will use a rare occasion to practise writing in English. Hence it is highly recommended.
