Course objectives
The lecture concentrates on the so called Viennese modernism and the cultural context in which it appeared. The limitation "Viennese" is of just a symbolical character - it also relates to languages and cultural deeds of non-German nations of the old monarchy. The course follows mainly works by Hugo von Hofmannsthal - both dramatical and reflective.

  • 1. Significance of form in the cultural and practical life on the Central Europe.
  • 2. Crisis of the collective and individual identities.
  • 3. So called crisis of language. Mathauser, Hofmannsthal, Ernst Mach, Ludwig Wittgenstein
  • 4. Dramatic texts by Hofmannsthal and their settings by Richard Strauss
  • 5. What is in fact Dvořák's/Kvapil's Rusalka about?
  • 6. Hofmannsthal's idea of stepping the live drama over by music, dance, pantomime, scene making. Spieloper
