Course objectives
The course contains on the one hand the information about the first conceptions of the language realized by ancient Greeks and Romans and about the reflexes of their knowledge in the sphere of modern linguistics; on the other hand the demonstration how the ancient languages, Greek and Latin, playing the substantial part in the origin and development of the European culture, participated in the evolution of particular Slavonic languages. The students obtain by this way the deeper knowledge about the degree of historical influence of the ancient languages in various spheres of each concrete language, above all about the Greek-Latin origin of many contemporary international expressions in various branches, especially in linguistics.
Syllabus
  • 1. Ancient Greek and the stages of its evolution.
  • 2. Conceptions of the language by ancient Greeks and Romans.
  • 3. The Greek alphabet. The pronunciation of words of Greek origin in Slavonic languages.
  • 4. The origin of the Latin alphabet. The influence of the Latin declension on Slavonic languages.
  • 5. The reflexion of ancient languages in Slavonic vocabulary and word-building
  • 6. The origin of international expressions in contemporary Slavonic and European languages
  • 7. The inception of the theory of cases in Greek and Latin. The contemporary state.
  • 8. The functional use of particular cases in ancient and Slavonic languages I.
  • 9. The functional use of particular cases in ancient and Slavonic languages II.
  • 10. The influence of Greek and Latin on the evolution of verbal forms in Slavonic languages: periphrastic and reflexive forms of passive, pluperfect, 2-nd future, conditional.
  • 11. The structures with participles in Slavonic languages.
  • 12. The word-order in ancient and Slavonic languages.
  • 13. The traces of Greek and Latin in Slavonic period.
