Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be able to describe methodologies and theories of research in the field of spiritual culture. They should be able to define and identify contemporary religious phenomena.
Syllabus
  • Methodology and theories of research in the field of spiritual culture
  • Magic – its origins, the meaning of the term, classification, contemporary research
  • Occultism in the Czech Republic, history, the present, and ethnological research
  • Occultism and new religious movements
  • Witchcraft and neopaganism, history and the present
  • Shamanism and neoshamanism , history, creation of the term, contemporary research
  • Folk beliefs – the cults of fire, water, tree; folk healing, folk meteorology; objects protecting people from trouble (amulets etc.)
  • Divination – the meaning of the term, history
  • S. Freud, C. G. Jung a Cl. Levi-Strauss and their theories of magic and magical thought
