Course objectives
This course examines the mechanisms which the Communist regime used against its political opponents, including within the party at the time. The aim is to bring to students’ attention the fact that the political trials formed an important and integral part of the Communist regime. The course is also designed with this aim in mind – for students to reflect on this whole era forms the whole basis of the subject.
Syllabus
  • The domestic and international political situation after the end of WWII.
  • The duties and responsibilities of specific state and party organs during the preparation and course of political trials
  • Political trials and public opinion
  • Selected political trials (eg Milada Horáková et al, Rudolf Slánský et al, the Babice case etc)
