- Course objectives
- This lecture is conceived as an introduction into the principles and productive methods of word formation of nouns (composition, external and internal derivation) in Greek and Latin. A special emphasis will lie on the principles of word formation inherited from Indo-European. At the end of this course students should be able to define principles and methods of formation of nouns; distinguis Greek suffixes; identify grammatical and semantic function of sufixes.
- Syllabus
- First a systematic overview over composition of nouns in Greek and Latin will be given. In the next step mainly word formation of nouns (substantives, adjectives) by suffixes shall be treated. A selected number of suffixes in Greek and Latin for the formation of nouns will be discussed and classified according to their grammatical and semantic function. Beside aspects of linguistic history also literary and stylistic aspects will be taken into consideration. The lecture is especially intended for students of Greek and Latin philology and of Indo-European linguistics.
