Course objectives
At the end of this course the studenti will have a knowledge and a broader understanding of the stable values of the ancient Near East, India and China and their changes in the so-called transitory periods of history; he will have the knowledge of the relatives of ancient man to the civilisation and nature; this includes also comparison of the contemporary values with those of the Antiquity; to examine the basis of the modern scale of ethic values; he will be able to discuss the importance of ethic heir of oldest ancient civilisations
Syllabus
  • 1) Cosmic order and its representation in the sources of the Ancient Near East. 2) State and law in the Ancient Mesopotamia. 3) Differencies and analogies between Mesopotamia and Egypt. 4) Religions of the two civilizations and their reflection in the human relationship. 5)The oldest European civilizations in the Antiquity and their relationships to the civilizations of the Ancient Near East. 6)Old Testament and the heritage of other civilizations of the Ancient Near East. 7) Values of the transitory epoch (the Dark Ages of Greek history). 8) Values of the consolidation period (the Archaic Period of Greek history). 9) Duties and virtues of a Greek citizen. 10) Constitutions of Greek poleis, their merits and deficiencies. 11) Religion and philosophy, ritual and rationality. 12) Ethics of the cosmic order and the problem of ancient slavery. 13) Hellenism and globalization. The importance of some ethic values of the Ancient Near East and of the Classical Antiquity for the contemporary society.
