Course objectives
The lecture deals with the central point of Plato's philosophy - with his Ideas. It will show Plato's texts in which he describes the Ideas, offer a systematic explanation of that point and explain Aristotle's critique of Plato's Ideas as well.

After the completion of the course, students should be able to: explain meaning and main items of Plato's theory of Ideas.

  • 1. Plato's ideas about the Ideas.
  • 2. The structure of the realm of ideas.
  • 3. The relationship of ideas and particulars (the third man problem).
  • 4. How are we to recognize ideas?
  • 5. Aristotle's critique of Plato's Ideas (Metaphysics).

Oral exam. Its subject will be discussion about:
1. two Plato's dialogues student will choose from the list in ELF and two special papers from another list.
2. main terms and problems of the topics of that course.

The conditions for completion are the same for the full-time students as well as for the students of combined form.
