- Course objectives
- An introductory survey of the history and theory of architecture and urbanism in the context of the rapidly changing technological and social circumstances of the 19th century. Lectures will map developments in architectural practice, as well as theoretical issues that were central to architectural discourse in this period. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify and discuss within their historical framework: major architectural movements; important buildings; major architects.
- Syllabus
- The course will treat architecture as part of the larger process of modernization which entailed the wide-spread industrialization and urbanization of the Europe. The role of architecture in these developments will be among the subjects of the course, as will the place of architecture in the formation of national identities, the articulation of national histories, the development of new building types, the role of new materials and technologies etc. Topics: science, archaeology and experiments in the neoclassicism; historicism and new buiding types; nationalism and stylistic debates in architecture; new technology and architektural form; urbanism and transformation of cities
