Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to define basic principles of Bertolt Brecht Epic theatre. The acting and dramaturgy will be stressed out. The Brecht’s sources of inspiration and periods of work will be defined.

  • 1. Piscator‘s epic theatre 2. The first performances of Brecht‘s epic theatre: Man is Man, Arise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny 3. Lehrstücks – engaged and didactic theatre; the relationship to public 4. Theoretical text from the period of emigration – The Street scene (basic model scene of epic theatre), Alienation effects in Chinese acting 5. Model performances and model books; the acting style of Berliner Ensemble 6. New Technique of Acting which Produces an Alienation Effect
