Course objectives
The Celts formed a more or less cultural unity in ancient Europe. In the course of their expansion over great parts of Europe they often got in contact with Greeks and Romans. Now The first reports about the Celts, their homeland, culture, social organization, religion etc. stem from Greek and Roman authors, and one always has to ask how reliable theses reports are. In the course we will read texts of Greek and Roman authors referring to different aspects of Celtic culture in English translation, and we will compare them with other sources (e.g. archaeological evidence, genuine Celtic mediaeval texts in English translation) which provide us information about the culture of ancient Celts. The lecture is also indented as a first introduction into Celtic linguistics and philology.

  • – Celts in ancient Europe and their expansion – Greek and Roman authors and their reports about Celts – Celtic religion, Celtic myth, social organization of Celts in the light of Greek and Roman authors – philological comparison of the reports of Greek and Roman authors with genuine Celtic sources (in English translation)
