Cíle předmětu
At the end of the course students should have learned and should be accustomed with • the main terminology of word formation in Latin and Greek • very productive means of word formation in Latin and Greek (composition, derivation) • how to analyze Latin and Greek words morphologically.
Osnova
  • This lecture is conceived as an introduction into the principles and productive methods of word formation of nouns (composition, external and internal derivation) in Greek and Latin. A special emphasis will lie on the principles of word formation inherited from Indo-European. First a systematic overview over composition of nouns in Greek and Latin will be given. In the next step mainly word formation of nouns (substantives, adjectives) by suffixes shall be treated. A selected number of suffixes in Greek and Latin for the formation of nouns will be discussed and classified according to their grammatical and semantic function. Beside aspects of linguistic history also literary and stylistic aspects will be taken into consideration. The lecture is especially intended for students of Greek and Latin philology and of Indo-European linguistics.
