- Course objectives
- The subject of the course is, on the one hand, a semantic analysis of cataloging principles and functional requirements for bibliographic records (FRBR), on the other hand, analysis of the structure of AACR2 from the viewpoint of general principles of cataloguing and requirements for functionality of bibliographic records. International cataloguing principles and FRBR represent the theoretical response to the needs of practice of the information mediation. The course aims both to show, how this theory of mean degree of abstraction depends on the specific problems of general semantics, both to analyze, how theoretically formulated principles and requirements correspond to the most widely spread cataloging rules (AACR2).
At the end of this course, a student will understand the bases of semantic issues, the principles of cataloguing and the most general structure of AACR2. - Syllabus
