Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to present various aspects of how human beings have perceived death and what changes there are and have been in the Western society in relation to death.
Syllabus
  • Death and its facets: Negation of death; Freud on death; becoming a taboo; anxiety, fear, aggressiveness. Beautiful death and dirty death: Antiquity; Christianity; Middle Ages; Modern period. Dirty death and agony: Description of dirty death; death at childbirth; execution; murder; suicide; curse. Death in children: baptized; non-baptized; Limbo. Death and elimination of old people. Living corpse: Description; living corpse in folklore; unbinding of the soul; definitive decomposition of the corpse; vampirism. Revenants: in the Bible; in the history of Christianity; in folklore. Terrorism: death and revolution; war and death
