Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
apply grammatical rules to translating of concrete sentences and easy texts from Latin and translating simple sentences into Latin;
analyze sentences and utilize the analysis in translating;
compare similarities and differences between various morphological forms;
convert clauses from active to passive voice and vice versa and do similar operations (use synonymic grammatical devices etc.)
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronunciation and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with the Czech ones. Introduction to declension and conjugation.
  • 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of agent.
  • 2nd declension nouns, 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Verb esse, compounds of the verb esse. Adverbs derived from the 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 3rd declension nouns.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 3rd declension adjectives, present participle and its use.
  • Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns is, idem, possessive genitive and dative.
  • Double accusative construction, accusative with infinitive.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice, homework, reading of simple Latin texts, translation.
Assessment methods
The credit is awarded for active participation in the classes and passing the control tests. Five or six such tests are written during the course. Attendance to tests is obligatory. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent five times without providing an excuse.
Requierements for obtaining the credit (students have to fulfill all of them):
  • Reach average success rate of at least 75% in all the tests;
  • Reach success rate of at least 75% in the last test;
  • Pass two online tests (revision after 5th and 10th lesson; success rate of 75%); pass 18 other online test (free choice, success rate of 75%).
  • If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (success rate of 75%).
