Cíle předmětu
This seminar is designed for students who would like to become more familiar with the differences in accents used by native speakers of English. A wide variety of audio materials will be used and a number of native speakers with different accents will be invited to the seminar. The aim is to make the students more aware of the variations found in spoken English and help them to improve their own comprehension skills and pronunciation.
Osnova
  • Introduction: What pronunciation implies in the English-speaking world. Standard and international English. Accents from the historical point of view. English-English accents. AmE accents. Global English, Pidgins and Creoles.

Výukové metody
Ample listening material with tapescripts is made available to students for home study (JC Wells, Accents of English; Collins and Mees, Practical Phonetics and Phonology). Useful websites are recommended. In class, further recordings are used and shared. The Sociolinguistics of accents is discussed on the basis of students' contributions.
Metody hodnocení
Assessment: attendance (3pts a session), theoretical and practical test max. 50pts, each presentation/contribution up to 10pts. 60 points are necessary for successful completion of the course.
