Course objectives

Target of the subject, primarily destined to the students of Serbian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian languages and literatures, is to become familiar with the history and culture at the territory of Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina since the exodus of Slavs to Balkans within Balkan wars (1912–1913). This way the students acquire complex survey in historical and cultural development of the south-eastern Europe as well as arguing skill in these matters.

Syllabus

• 1. Ancient heritage and Byzantine Empire, coming of Slavs to Balkans and early Slavonic states 2. Golden age of Bulgarian Empire – first Bulgarian czardom. 3. Bloom of medieval Serbian state. 4. Expansion and downfall of second Bulgarian czardom (culture, political development within 1392). 5. Ottoman invasion to Balkans and twilight of medieval Slavonic Balkan states (characteristics of Ottomans and their expansive power, turn point battles and genesis of Kosovo myth, die away of Serbian statehood.) 6. Medieval Bosnia 7. Balkans within the framework of Ottoman Empire (political, cultural and social characterization in peak Ottoman era, position of non-Moslem inhabitants and its culture, Islamization, church issues, resistance against Ottoman power). 8. Wars of Austrian monarchy and Russia with Ottoman Empire, migration of inhabitants, specific development in Montenegro. 9. National awakening and national-emancipation movements of Balkan Slavonic nations (Serbian cultural center in southern Hungary and its influence to national revival of Balkan Orthodox nations, trial in reforms of Turkish state, Serbian uprisings and establishment of Serbian autonomy and Serbian national program, Bulgarian national revival) 10. Great eastern crisis, congress of Berlin and its consequences. 11. Macedonian and Bosnian issue. 12. Political development in Serbia ad Bulgaria at the turn point of 19th and 20th centuries, Yung Turkish revolutions, Balkan alliance and Balkan wars.
