Course objectives
Main objectives of the lecture:
Specification and clarification of the term fantastic literature;
Mastering the fundamentals of the history and development of fantastic literature in the world and in the Czech context;
Introduction of the work of prominent authors.

At the end of the course students should:
Be acquainted within categories of fantastic literature;
Be able to identify key points in the development of fantastic literature in the world and in Czech context;
Distinguish modern fantastic literature and its taproot texts
Determine the founding works of fiction;
Interpret fantastic texts in relation to their historical context;
In addition, students will be able to actively complement other relevant fundamental and theoretical literature, will have an overview of the emerging possibilities of studying fantastic literature.
Syllabus
  • What we are talking about when we talk about fantastic literature - intuitive definition of fantastic literature, fantastic element, level of professional reflection of fantastic literature in the Czech Republic and abroad, introduction of available literature.
  • Where does the fantastic literature begin? - fantastic literature and mythology, religion, taproot texts, predecessors of modern fantastic.
  • The beginnings of science fiction and fantasy in the USA, in Western and Eastern Europe.
  • Fantastic literature in the early 20th century.
  • New wave in sixties.
  • Fantastic literature today.
  • The beginnings of Czech fantastic literature.
  • Fantastic literature during totality.
  • Fantastic coup after the Velvet Revolution.
  • Czech fantastic literature today.

thematic reading (compulsory texts), elaboration of analysis of given text and its oral presentation (homework), discussion on topic.
Assessment methods
Reading of short texts (at disposal in advance), their analysis and presentation of the analysis, active participation on seminary (thematic discussion).
