Course objectives
Seminar will be aimed at horror genre, in particular at current theoretical concepts of horror which go over the traditional perceiving of this genre. The attention will be paid to the specific structure of horror fictional worlds as well as to aspects of context and reception. The contents of individual lessons will be both the reading of theoretical texts and the application of these to particular works of literary, cinematic and gaming horror.

At the end of this course the student will be able:
- to understand basic conceptions of horror theory,
- to apply this conceptions to particular literary text,
- to analyze the horror fictions with regard to its inner structure and historical context.

  • What does horror mean: definition of the genre
  • What does it mean to fear: neuroscience and theory of emotions
  • At the edge of two worlds: horror in light of structuralism and fictional worlds theory
  • Monster and cognition: cognitivist theory of horror
  • Monster and unconscious: psychoanalytic theory of horror
  • Collective nightmares: horror and new historicism
  • Sociology of horror
