Course objectives
The aim of this course is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of the nominal groupe and of determinants in French grammar. Students should be able to define basic grammar terms. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic grammatic phenomena, namely the functions of determinants in context. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard.
Syllabus
  • Morphosyntax of determinants: a) The nominal group - noun, adjective, determinant b) Articles - define, undefine, partitive, "zero", articles preceedings common names b) Other compulsory determinants (previously named "determinatives adjectives") - the possessive, demonstrative, numeral, indefinite, interrogative, exclamatory, relative d) Optional components of the determinant group - predeterminants (tout), postdeterminants (seul, quelconque, certain), identifiers (autre, meme) e) The extended nominal group

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific texts, proceeding from diverse registers. Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts and exercises.
Assessment methods
Students can obtain final result only if they participate actively in the course, attendance is required (80%). During the whole semester, students works in the course and in the end, there is as written test (minimum: 60% of achievement), and an oral exam focused on the topics discussed during the semester, where students show their ability to explain phenomena in accordance (or in conflict) with the standard.
