Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
explain grammatical rules studied within the course;
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
recognize grammatical categories of the morphological forms studied within the course;
translate simple Latin sentences into Czech;
describe grammatical structure of a clause.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronuntiation and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with Czech. Introduction to declension and conjugation.
  • 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of agent.
  • 2nd declension nouns, 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Verb esse and its compounds. Adverbs of 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 3rd declension nouns.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 3rd declension adjectives, present participle and its use.
  • Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative prononus - is, ea, id; idem, eadem, idem; possessive genitive and dative.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice (translation, grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Requirements for successful completion of the course: passing the final written test (passing score: 70% - credit, 75% - colloquium); pass two online tests (revision after 5th and 10th lesson; success rate of 70%); pass 18 other online test (free choice, success rate of 70%); active class participation. During the semester, two control tests will be written. If students pass these tests, the success rate of the final test will be lowered by 5%.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti obecné jazykovědy, klasické řečtiny, mediteránních studií a klasické archeologie volí ukončení kolokviem, ostatní ukončení zápočtem.
The course is taught annually.
