- Course objectives
- An experience-oriented course that features several currents of contemporary dance therapy as a part of body-based psychotherapy and artetherapy. It distinguishes therapeutic dance (primitive expression, symbolic dance therapy) and dance movement psychotherapy. It also refers to other forms of dance use in psychotherapy, such as Cuban psychobalet. Relativity with other body-directed psychotherapy reveals the inclusion of contact relaxation and improvisation, massage and general focus on deepening contact with the body and strengthening positive self-acceptance.
- Learning outcomes
- Students become acquainted with a variety approaches of dance movement therapy.
- they will test techniques based on several currents of contemporary dance therapy;
- their awareness of the basic principles, methods, goals, effective therapeutic factors and leaders of individual dance-therapeutical directions will be deapened;
- they will be able to take samples of the practical use of the techniques through a video in the study materials. - Syllabus
- 1. Origin and development of the dance therapy in the USA and in Europe, dance therapy and therapeutic dance
- 2. Group folk dances of different nations and their importance for psychic health, social function of dance
- 3. Pprimitive expression (F. Schott-Billmann)
- 4. Symbolic dance therapy, L. Sheleen, danced archetypes
- 5. American dance therapy (M. Berger), dance movement therapy based on the Laban movement analysis
- 6. Cuban psycho-ballet (D. Cruz)
- 7. Self-concept aimed to relationship with own body, contact improvisation and relaxation

- Teaching methods
- Education is divided into two whole-day classes and takes place in the MU gymnasium. Workshops, lectures, class discussions, sharing of experiences, group projects, homework and its presentation.
- Assessment methods
- The course is concluded with the colloquium. Admission conditions: active participation in the both classes, elaboration of an intended homework.
