- This course represents an introduction to Byzantine archaeology. It presents an overview of its conception, chronological definition, material culture, main sources and bibliography. The first part of the course is informative; the second aims to develop both as the independent as the team critical study using complex research methods. It is designed to create a dialogue and form discussion on the topic.

- Course objectives
- This course is an introduction to Byzantine archaeology. It presents its characteristic material culture and primary bibliography. The first part of the course is informative; the second aims to accent and develop both independent and team critical study through the use of complex research methods. It is designed to create a dialogue and form discussion on the topic.
- Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the contemporary state of Byzantine archaeology. Knowledge of material culture. Knowledge of the main sources and bibliography. Ability to realize small/limited research project.

- I. Introduction to Byzantine archaeology 1. History of research, primary bibliography and institutions 2. Chronological systems, main archaeological sites and monuments 3. Material culture of Late Antiquity (Late Roman and Early Byzantine Periods) 4. Material culture of Middle and Late Byzantine Period 5. Tradition of Czech Byzantology 6. projects of the Institute of Archaeology and Museology II. Selected issues in Byzantine history and their reflection in archaeological contexts 7. Transfer of the Roman capital to the East 8. The period of changes – reign of Justinian and his successors 9. Slaves and the Byzantine Empire 10. Loss of the Levant and the rise of Islam 11. Macedonian Dynasty and its relationship to West Europe, the differences between West European and Byzantine feudalism 12. Crusades and the so-called Franks in the Byzantine Empire, fall of Constantinople
