Course objectives
The aim of the course to reading Ovid is an introduction to the reading of Latin poetry. It is dedicated to description and analysis of selected types of Latin verses appearing in the classical poetry with special focus on the works of Ovid and Catull, such as hexameters, pentameters, hendecasyllables,choliambic verse, iambic trimeter and Sapphic stanzas). Selected poems by Ovid and Catullus will be read. The course provide the participants of the course with all necessary instruments for reading ancient poetry and a broader and more solid knowledge about the literary and social context of the Latin classical poets (commentaries, stylistical figures, topics). It deals with detailed commentaries andy analysis of selected ancient petical texts. It cultivates the translation skills and the ability to evaluate critically various commentaries and secondary literature concerning these texts.The course is accompanied by e-learning course See http://www.phil.muni.cz/elf/ Ovidius nový.
Learning outcomes
The course is an introduction to the reading of Latin poetry. After the successfull completion of the course, students will be able to: describe, analyze and read correctly the different types of Latin verses appearing in the classical poetry such as hexameters, pentameters, hendecasyllables, choliambic verses, iambic trimeter and Sapphic stanzas. By means of reading selected poems by Ovid and Catullus the participants of the course will get all necessary instuments to a broader and more solid knowledge about the literary and social context of the Latin classical poetry, will be able to understand, comment, analyze and appreciate these ancient texts. The students will be further able to evaluate critically various commentaries and secondary literature concerning these texts.

Teaching methods
The course includes practice with focus on correct translation and interpretation of the Latin original poetic texts into Czech language. Active attendance and participation 75% is required. Regular weekly work at home consisting of translation from Latin to Czech is expected. Special attention will be paid to the use of modern commentaries and to the knowledge of Ancient mythology and reality. Phraseology. Each student must present a paper dealing with the specific problems of Latin elegy. In case of absence, the students have to send the translation of selected texts via e-mail.
Assessment methods
The course is taught as both lecture and seminar. A paper and its oral delivery on the topic selected during the semester. At the end, written and oral final examination: analysis of the metre of a selected poem and its adequate translation from Latin. Active participation at the classes is also expected. The students have to complete also the tasks in the elf course (as test and workshop).
