Cíle předmětu
Urban farming has become central to discussions of the future of the city. Many cities across the globe have established community gardens in which residents cultivate and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, and small farmers’ markets offer locally grown produce in the heart of the city. But is urban farming really such a new phenomenon? Can we make sense of the city without studying the changing relationship between people, the built environment, plants and water? How do people create and experience spaces that we call urban or agrarian? If nature is not a given but a site of perpetual engagement with the landscape, can we understand how a city like Istanbul changes together with its lakes, streams, and agricultural land? This course uses an interdisciplinary approach to educate students from diverse academic backgrounds (such as history, biology, environmental studies, public policy, heritage management, archaeology) about the context and history of urban farming practices and water management in Istanbul.
