Course objectives
The goal of this subject is to present the connection between psychology and religious experience in order to show the positive influence of faith on individual well-being and also to show the possibility to destroy the personality by misinterpreted religious experience. Because of the limited time, the field of study has been narrowed to Christianity. The goal of the topic is not a theoretical lecture but the presentation of practical experiences (research results, case studies). The discussion about the actual critical topics from the Church environment is welcomed.
Learning outcomes
Students will have overview od psychology of religion – historical backgrounds and present issues. They will also have common knowledges of religionist and philosophy of religion, which form backgrounds of psychology of religion. They will also be able to reflect special themes as development of religion experiencing by ontogenesis, religious conversion, psychological overview on religious rituals, suicide, homosessuality or sexual abuse among Churches. They will also be able to reflect religious experiencing by the main psychiatric diseases.

  • Introduction + possibility to fulfill some spirituality tests.
  • The main world religions.
  • History of psychology of religion.
  • Research of spirituality.
  • Religion as a social fenomenon. Sects.
  • The spiritual interpretation of the Bible.
  • The religious rituals.
  • Religion and ethics.
  • Development of the faith by believers.
  • Psychopathology of religion (religious experience within defense mechanisms, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety).
  • Special issues: pedofil skandals, homosesuality, suicidium.

Active participation on lessons and essay ( 3 – 5 pages) on one of the following themes:
The role of Christianity for the present society - the view of the student of psychology.
The psychological analysis of relationship between religion and violence – historical events (Crusader expeditions) and present evens (the terroristic attacks motivated by religious fanaticism).
Homosessuality and christianity - defense of "tradition values" or nonrespect to sexual minorities?
Believer client and non-believer therapist.
A free theme from the field of religion psychology (the previous consultation with a teacher is obligatory).
