Course objectives
This course offers an overview of the critical historical events that define the history of European colonization of North America beginning at the end of the fifteenth century. Selected original documents and texts are use to supplement scholarly texts on the topic, covering areas relating to culture, literature and art as well as history.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing this course students will have an understanding of the history of European colonization of North America and how this colonization has contributed to the creation of historical and cultural legacies that still dominate the relationships between America’s indigenous peoples and the majority populations of Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Syllabus
  • This course will provide students with an overview of European colonization of North American, focusing on the interactions between the colonizers and the indigenous populations of North America. The course is divided into three modules: Spanish Colonization, French Colonization and Anglo-American colonization. Readings will include a general historical overview of colonization and primary period texts relating to the specific modules. The readings for this course will be available in English and either French or Spanish. Seminars and discussions will be held in Czech and English.
