- Course objectives
- The course will familiarize students with the structure of the church administration in the Czech lands (dioceses of Prague, Olomouc and Litomyšl) from around 1300 to 1419. The seminars will present the individual church authorities of Prague, as well as the Olomouc and Litomyšl dioceses: their genesis and development, their day-to-day running and written agendas. Documents from the individual authorities will be read and analyzed, and the numerous possibilities for their use in the context of historical research will be highlighted in essays.
- Learning outcomes
- In the seminars, students will be able to work with one important group of sources on Czech Medieval history and, as part of their essay preparation, will extend their experience with the general methodology of historical research.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction: the beginnings of Church organizations in the Czech lands until the 13th century;
- 2) Archbishop and Bishop. The ordination of the clergy;
- 3) Diocesan law, statutes and synods;
- 4) Metropolitan Chapter and Episcopal Chapters;
- 5-8) Central Bishops' Offices of the Archdiocese of Prague;
- 9) Office of the clerk corrector of the Archdiocese of Prague;
- 10) Inquisitor's office;
- 11) Central representative offices of the Litomyšl and Olomouc bishops;
- 12) Final lesson: credit test.

- Teaching methods
- Each lesson will be based on a 30-minute lectures followed by a 60-minute seminar where excerpts from selected documents will be read and interpreted, and students' essays will be read out.
- Assessment methods
- The criteria for gaining a credit is active participation in the seminars, writing and presenting a paper, and successfully passing a credit test which will focus on students' knowledge of the development of church administration and the ability to work with the basic series of the general vicar's official books.
