- Course objectives
- Latin Grammar V is designed for students of major or completus study plan. The major part of the course focuses on use of verbal forms in indirect reported discourse, which in Latin is often much longer than in modern languages and in which specific verbal forms or constructions can appear. Besides that, students gain insight into heterogeneous group of comparative clauses, and functions of cases in simple clause.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
- paraphrase the basic rules of Latin normative syntactic phenomena studied within the course (vide the syllabus of the course);
- translate clauses into Czech and Latin;
- analyze complex Latin sentences;
- explain the use of grammatical phenomena in Latin sentences;
- use synonymic constructions and explain differences in their meaning;
- describe essentials of theoretical framework used for research into Latin syntax in current Latin linguistics;
- sketch the system of Latin subordinate clauses and non-finite verb constructions;
- identify functions of individual cases. - Syllabus
- Comparative clauses (quantifying and qualifying type, use of tenses and moods).
- Indirect reported discourse with special attention paid to conditional clauses (general rules or rather tendencies in use of verbal forms, usual verbal forms found conditional sentences dependent on different types of predicates).

- Teaching methods
- The course includes lectures and practice with focus on translating into Czech and Latin, analysis of the Latin clauses, and exercises designed to check comprehension of syntactic phenomena under examination. Students are also encouraged to discuss function of the use of forms and constructions and practise correct argumentation. Regular work at home is expected.
- Assessment methods
- The credit is awarded for passing the written tests. Several such tests are written during the course. Attendance to tests is obligatory. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent three times without providing an excuse.
Requierements for obtaining the credit (students have to fulfill all of them):
reach average success rate of at least 75% in all the tests;
reach success rate of at least 75% in the last test.
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (success rate of 75%). - Language of instruction
