- Prerequisites
- A basic knowledge of modern Latin palaeography (reading of the script), basic orientation in the early modern history of administration and in other disciplines of the auxiliary sciences of history (especially diplomatics, chronology, historical metrology, numismatics etc.), a knowledge of the German language is an advantage. Students are also expected to work independently with sources in archives.

- Course objectives
- The course focuses on practical work with sources on the history of Jews in the Czech lands with a focus on the development of the Jewish community in Moravia. By reading extracts from sources, students will learn the basic techniques of critiquing and interpreting sources and edition work.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify and critically assess the sources on the history of the Jews;
- define the main concepts from the history of the administration of Jewish communities;
- describe the main tendencies in the historical development of the Jewish community in the Czech lands in relation to the majority of the population;
- independently look for relevant sources on the history of the Jews in archive collections;
- edit a relevant source, interpret it and place this information within the context of the academic literature; - Syllabus
- 1) Basic typology of sources, introduction to issues;
- 2) Registers of Jews (urbaria, cadastres, conscriptions);
- 3) Royal privileges for Jews, assembly resolutions;
- 4) Manorial privileges for Jewish communities;
- 5) Structure of the Jewish community;
- 6) Land registers, registers of births, marriages and deaths;
- 7) Trade, crafts, leasing of seigniorial enterprises;
- 8) Anti-Judaism (decrees against Jews, allegations of ritual murder, resolution 1650);
- 9) Narrative sources – urban chronicles;
- 10) Maps and plans (isolation, Familiants law), vedute of cities;
- 11) Preservation of the source, textual critique of the source, interpretation;
- 12) Foundations of edition work, creation of regesta, topic of the seminar work;

- Reading of extracts from sources on the history of Jews in the Czech lands in copies of the original (modern Latin script) in Czech, German and Latin. Critique of the source, language and content analysis of the text and the form of editing of the source.
