- Course objectives
- The course Historické a teoretické problémy ukrajinské literatury I. is conceived in the form of seminars and requires active participation of students. The literary works are selected on the basis of compulsory reading for the final exam (19th century and early twentieth century). The primary objective of the course is to deepen the knowledge of selected topics from Ukrainian literature and from the Ukrainian critical reception. After completing the course, the student should be able to interpret the most important literary works and to see the literature in the context of Ukrainian history.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the student will be able to focus on the most fundamental issues currently addressed by Ukrainian literary criticism.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to the study of Ukrainian literature of the first half of the 19th century. The origins of Ukrainian literature (I. Kotlyarevsky). The foundation of the burlesque school. Narrative poetry – Eneida and its interpretation. Romanticism in world´s literature. Ukrainian romanticism and its main representative – T. Schevchenko. Reading and interpretation of some of texts from Kobzar. Reception of Shevchenko´s literary work. Contemporary literary criticism and interpretation of Schevchenko´s literary work. Sentimentalism in Ukrainian and Russian literature. Interpretation of some short stories (N. Karamzin, M. Vovchok). The development of Ukrainian literature of the second half of the 19th century in the contemporary political context. Social realism and its main representatives (I. Nechuy-Levycky). Literary process of the second half of the 19th century in western Ukraine (V. Stefanyk, L. Martovych). Women-writers in the second half of the 19th century and early twentieth century. The beginnings of the emancipation movement in the Ukrainian literature. Literary work of O. Kobylyanska.
