- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is presenting important works of general and Anglo-American theoretical linguistic literature and guiding the students to a comparison between the Anglo-American and the Czech linguistic traditions. Another aim is to deepen their knowledge of the methodology of linguistic research.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will become acquainted with important works of general and Anglo-American theoretical linguistic literature. They will be able to compare the Anglo-American and the Czech linguistic traditions. They will deepen their knowledge of the methodology of linguistic research.
- Syllabus
- 1. The works of Mathesius, Vachek, Firbas and Daneš and their contribution to the current research within English Linguistics. 2. Anglo-American lingusitic appraoches: N. Chomsky and hos theory of generative grammar. 3. Anglo-American lingusitic appraoches: M.A.K. Halliday and his functional systemic approach to language 4. Theory of meaning: Pragmatics, semantics, and sociolinguistics 5. Interdisciplinary approach to the study of language
