- Course objectives
- To provide students with instructions for methodically correct solutions of certain basic methodic issues of ancient history. To guide them in individual work under supervision to solve selected minor methodic problem areas.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will
- be able to independently find and characterize various problems of historic development in Antiquity;
- get acquainted with basic possibilities of their solution;
- get prepared for handling the methodological part of their final theses. - Syllabus
- The syllabus of the course is subject to change.
- Basic topics:
- 1) Definition of the general term ancient state and characterization of different types of states in Antiquity
- 2) Methodological issues relating the transition from the tribal society to the state in ancient Orient and in classical Antiquity.
- 3) Definition of terms relating to rule and administration of ancient states.
- 4) Definition of sacral rule.
- 5) Characteristization of agricultural and nomadic states.
- 6) Work with sources that contain terminology pertaining to state.
- 7) Differences between the Roman Principate and the Dominate.
- 8) The issue of ancient absolutism.
- 9) Methodological characteristics of the s. c. barbaric states between antiquity and the Middle Ages.
- 10) Text-critical analysis of ancient sources.
- 11) Text-critical analysis of sources for the Intermediate period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
