- Course objectives
- Medieval Latin is a historico-cultural and linguistic phenomenon, continuing the old tradition of the Latin language and the literature of Classical Antiquity. The course on Medieval Latin provides a comprehensive overview of this continuity and highlights the main characteristics of Medieval Latin and literature as upholders of spiritual culture in both the European and Czech Middle Ages. The course also presents Medieval Latin as a language of historical sources and diplomatic documents. It outlines all the information about the sources and specialized literature for the further study of this topic.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students will be able to:
- be familiar with study aids for medieval Latin (textbooks and primers, dictionaries, editions);
- translate simple medieval Latin texts of a literary and diplomatic nature with the help of dictionaries. - Syllabus
- LECTURE: Topics and chronology of Medieval Latin studies;
- History of Medieval Latin studies;
- Constituent elements of Medieval Latin (Classical Latin, Vulgar Latin, Christian Latin);
- Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin;
- The state of the Latin language during the late Roman empire;
- Merovingian Latin;
- Carolingian Renaissance (and other "humanistic" movements of the Middle Ages up to Renaissance Humanism);
- Benedictine monasteries of the Early Middle Ages;
- Insular Latin and its representatives;
- Christianization of Czech lands and the origins of Czech-Latin literature;
- Latin of the High Middle Ages (main divergency from Classical Latin);
- Forms and genres of Medieval Latin prose;
- Forms of Medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythmo-metrical poetry);
- Religious poetry of the Latin Middle Ages. Secular poetry of the Latin Middle Ages;
- SEMINAR: Reading, translation and analysis of selected literary - and especially diplomatic - texts.
