Course objectives
This course is a practical introduction in the basic procedures of historical research and critical comparison in the study of religions. Students gradually proceed from a basic bibliographic search through basics of textual and source criticism to a research project proposal. Students who pass the exam then follow this research project proposal and submit an essay.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
  • perform and gradually deepen a bibliographic search using different resources and tools (efficient search on the internet, in library catalogues and databases of electronic resources; using footnotes of relevant contributions; searching for reviews; etc.);
  • distinguish sources from secondary literature;
  • understand the problem of genesis and tradition of a text (on a basic level);
  • use some basic concepts of textual criticism;
  • use the basics of source criticism in the interpretation of textual sources;
  • design and conduct a systematic critical comparison of two textual sources or their passages.

    Teaching methods
    Lectures, practical training, submissions (bibliographic search, excercise in textual and source criticism, research project proposal, essay).
    Assessment methods
    Bibliographic search (10 %), excercise to textual and source criticism (15 %), research project proposal (25 %), written essay (40 %) and its oral presentation (10 %). For colloquium, the final assignment is the research project proposal (i.e., the essay is not required for colloquium).
    Attendance and the quality of work in the seminars (extra points).
