Course objectives
The student prepares 3 main topics recovering theoretical linguistics and Romance linguistics. The choice of topics is consulted with the tutor at least 2 months before the exam. The topics are not allowed to be identical with the theme of the thesis.
Learning outcomes
Students get detailed knowledge in assigned fields and they are able to frame it in the context of their own research and field of study.
Syllabus
  • 1. Linguistics and its field of study. Language as a system of signs.
  • 2. Evolution of linguistic thinking in European (or Western) tradition in relation with evolution of Romance linguistics or study of particular Romance languages.
  • 3. From traditional grammar to modern linguistics. Prescriptive and descriptive approach. Synchronic and diachronic approach.
  • 4. Interdisciplinary approach and its contribution to synchronic and diachronic study of Romance languages.
  • 5. Fonetics and phology.
  • 6. Morfology. Approaches to study of word formation in Romance languages according to different theoretical models.
  • 7. Syntax. Approaches to study of word formation in Romance languages according to different theoretical models.
  • 8. Lexikology. Approaches to study of word formation in Romance languages according to different theoretical models.
  • 9. Semantics and pragmatics.Approaches to study of word formation in Romance languages according to different theoretical models.
  • 10. Geografical and social variation of Romance languages (according to student´s specialization).
  • 11. Language politics and language planning. Codification of normative varieties of Romance languages (according to student´s specialization).
  • 12. Language typology. Clasification of Romance languages.
  • Topics can be specified if agreed with the tutor.
