Course objectives
Lectures are oriented to the visual art in Europe from its beginnings to the first decades of the 16th century. The main objectives of the course are the following: acquainting students with the basic terms and categories of history of art, as well as with methodology of work of the art historian. An essay has to be written, interpreting a selected oeuvre or set of works.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able:
- use basic terms of art history
- distinguish artistic styles from antiquity to renaissance in the main features
- consider methods of art history

  • Basic terminology: architecture, sculpture, painting
  • Canon of beauty and aesthetic geometry
  • Iconoclasm and iconoduly, religion and art
  • Periodization of art and its interpretation on selected examples
  • The ancient art
  • Arts and crafts of the middle ages
