- Course objectives
- The aim of the seminar is to get the students acquainted with standard theoretical approaches to the passive voice within the frames of both functional and formal grammar, especially generative grammar. As this course is focused on Czech Studies students, the aim is also to provide an explanation of aspect in passive participle and its longer or shorter forms. The aim is also to present a formal analysis of the passive voice in various theoretical models, as an addition to students’ previous knowledge, ui.e. to the functional view of the passive voice.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - understand current theoretical knowledge in the field of syntax; - apply theoretical knowledge of syntax to the analysis of passive Czech sentences; - present a paper presenting his analysis of Czech passive data
- Syllabus
- Lexicalistic and transformational concepts of the passive voice are being contrasted, taking into consideration predictability of creating the passive voice. Relevant factors (both syntactic and semantic) appear here and a theoretical explanation of auxiliaries selection in the passive voice is provided.
