- Course objectives
- An introductory course discussing the basic questions, concepts and methds of the linguistics especially in context of German and Germanic Languages.
There is a strong focus on terminology, enabling students to understand more advanced topics of the respective specialised courses. - Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: work with a basic terminology of linguistics in scholarly literature; identify and use the relevant lexica, handbooks and dictionaries for linguistic topics; use the terminology and methodology in more specialised courses; explain basic linguistic phenomenons; identify selected language features and their functions.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to basic concepts and methods of the linguistics: basic characteristics and functions of the language, linguistic sign, synchrony and diachrony
- classification of languages, typology, analytical and synthetical language features, Germanic languages, aerial and chronological division of German, varieties of German - Dialectology
- disciplines of linguistics (main characteristics, the relevant terminology, handbooks, lexica), Phonetics / Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Lexicology, Lexicography, Word Fromation, Phraseology, Stilistics, introduction to Text Linguistics

- Teaching methods
- In the lectures the general characteristics, terminology and methodology of the linguistics are presented. This introduction is designed as a propedeutics for the specialised linguistic courses. In the seminars the acquired skills will be practiced on natural texts, further elaborated and concretised.
