Course objectives
Introduce students to flamenco as a cultural phenomenon with an emphasis on its literary and musical aspects.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to identify the roots of flamenco, describe the stages of flamenco history, describe the basic flamenco styles, analyze music and dance examples, describe the characteristics of flamenco poetry, explain the influence of flamenco on the work of Andalusian poets.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Basic concepts. Geography of flamenco. The culture of flamenco. 2. The roots of flamenco. Arabs, Christians, Gypsies. 3. The history of flamenco (19th-20th centuries). 4. Flamenco poetry: origin, general characteristics. 5. Flamenco poetry: themes and forms. 6. Flamenco poetry: influences on author poetry (A. Ferrán, G. A. Bécquer, M. Machado, A. Machado, F. G. Lorca). 7. The flamenco guitar. 8. Aesthetics. Styles with four beat rhythm. 9. Styles with twelve beat rhythm and without rhythm. 10. Flamenco aesthetics: cante. 11. Flamenco aesthetics: baile. 12. Flamenco aesthetics: rhythm, guitar.
