Course objectives
Ability to assess the level and quality of the interpretation of a musical composition; orientation in the main stylistic features of (mainly) European music; to assess whether the interpretation corresponds to the basic stylistic elements; to be able to register performance deficiencies and flaws; to recommend how the quality of the performance could be improved.
Learning outcomes
- describe and summarize the important features of the main periods in the history of (mostly) European music;
- analyse by ear the individual voices and instruments of a piece of music under consideration;
- recognise and analyse the sound quality of a piece of music under consideration;
- recognise and analyse the musical quality of the piece under consideration;

  • - music in Europe from the beginning to the 20th century;
  • - musical instruments - from soloists to chamber ensembles to large orchestra;
  • - vocal music - instrumental music;
  • - music and its notation, methods of performance;
  • - communication - the ability to describe musical sensations and to formulate an opinion about them;

Teaching methods
- listening to samples of compositions from individual periods and from their important representatives;
- identification of important distinctive elements of the style periods;
- aural identification of musical instruments, knowledge of their sound and technical possibilities;
- comparison of recordings of different performance level and quality;
Assessment methods
Written study - evaluation of submitted recordings for assessment.
