Course objectives
In the course “Modern literature” an overview is given of Dutch and Flemish literature from 1880 till now.
Part 1 (FF: NI02_03 Nizozemská literatura 20. a 21. století I) focusses on the period up to the fifties of the twentieth century. In addition, attention is paid to The Big Three of post-war literature: W.F. Hermans, Gerard Reve and Harry Mulisch.
Other important names in post-war literature, such as L.P. Boon, Hugo Claus and Hella S. Haasse, are discussed in part 2 (NI02_07 Nizozemská literatura 20. století II), which deals with literature from the 1960s till now.
The students are introduced to important movements, authors and works from Dutch-language literature, which are situated in their cultural-historical context. students read parts from "Dějiny nizozemské a vlámské literatury". During class, specific authors and texts are analysed.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students should:
- know the broad outlines of Dutch literary history (from 1880 till 160) - know important literary movements and canonized authors and texts in the period mentioned
- be able to situate these in the broader (cultural) history of the Netherlands and Flanders
- be able to read and analyse literary texts written in Dutch
